Team Holt announces fund to help non-profits build more houses

Saint John, October 17, 2024 – New Brunswick is desperate for more affordable housing options. Having already announced housing initiatives focused on homeowners, tenants, and private developers, today Susan Holt and her team announced the creation of the Community Housing Retention and Expansion Pilot to help the non-profit and community sectors build more affordable housing.
“We have non-profits and community groups doing incredible work all across New Brunswick,” said Susan Holt. “This fund will allow them to do even more to help New Brunswick close the gap in housing supply, especially for affordable housing options. We have heard from non-profits that they need help and Team Holt is prepared to put forth that help just like we have done for New Brunswick renters, homeowners, and contractors.”
A Holt government would build 30,000 homes, getting to work on solving New Brunswick’s housing crisis and making it more affordable to live in our province by:
- Creating a Community Housing Retention and Expansion Pilot to fund housing in the non-profit and community sectors that support capacity building pre-construction costs, and acquisition
- Implementing a 3% rent cap
- Reforming the property tax system
- Eliminating the PST on new multi-unit developments
- Increasing investment in made-in-New Brunswick solutions, like modular housing and off-site construction
- Expanding social housing
- Investing in public housing for renovation and new construction
- Providing sustainable core funding for transitional housing and frontline domestic violence services
- Funding for safety and accessibility renovations for seniors and people with disabilities who want to remain in their homes.
“Despite Higgs’ one-page platform being more expensive than our entire platform, he has no plan to solve New Brunswick’s housing crisis – he didn’t even mention housing a single time,” said Holt. “My team and I are focused on New Brunswickers and working towards everyone having access to safe and affordable housing.”
