Roger Melanson appointed as Interim Leader of the Official Opposition

Fredericton (September 28, 2020) – The New Brunswick Liberal Caucus has chosen Dieppe MLA Roger Melanson as Interim Leader of the Official Opposition of New Brunswick.
Melanson, who was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly in 2010, and re-elected in 2014, 2018 and 2020, served as a member of the Executive Council having been appointed as Minister of Finance, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, President of the Treasury Board, Minister responsible for Trade Policy, Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs and Minister of Energy and Resource Development. He also served as Chair of the New Brunswick Board of Management, Chair of the Jobs Board and as a member of the Priorities Board.
A graduate of the Université de Moncton, he holds bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, with a Major in Political Science and a minor in Business Administration. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Université de Moncton as well as a Diploma in Business Development from Babson Executive Education, Boston.
Melanson served as the General Manager of the Economic Development Corporation of the City of Dieppe and as a Senior Account Executive for Spielo, in international business development.
Melanson and his wife, Lise Babin have two children, Émilie and Simon.
“I am thankful for the confidence that the Liberal Caucus has placed in me, said Melanson, and I am eager to assume my new role as Interim Leader of the Official Opposition”.
Melanson believes the Liberal Opposition will play a crucial role in bringing forth new ideas and protecting the interests of New Brunswickers.
“Premier Higgs wanted a majority government to carry through with his hidden agenda. New Brunswickers can be confident that he will not do so without being held to account”, said Melanson.
