Moncton, Saturday, September 21 – New Brunswick is in a housing crisis. Today, the Holt team committed to taking significant measures to stabilize access to affordable housing in the province. “We will eliminate the 10% provincial sales tax on multi-unit housing construction. This will spur the development of more housing projects throughout the province,” said Liberal Leader Susan Holt.
This is a policy that both Nova Scotia and PEI have adopted. Per capita, the two neighbouring provinces have each more than doubled the rate of new builds compared to New Brunswick. The Liberal leader also explained that her government will work with New Brunswick companies in constructing modular and off-site homes to reach the target of 30,000 new housing units.
“The Higgs government has been dragging its feet for far too long, leaving people in precarious housing situations. Our population is growing, and we welcome that, but it can’t happen without a solid plan to tackle the housing shortage,” added Holt.
“The price of rent and home ownership is skyrocketing because Higgs doesn’t have a plan to build more homes. We will stabilize prices and ensure more New Brunswickers have access to the affordable and available housing they need.” concluded the Liberal leader.
