Saint John, September 27, 2024 – Liberal Leader Susan Holt announced today that a Holt government will overhaul New Brunswick’s property tax system to ensure it is transparent, competitive, affordable, and fair.
“New Brunswick homeowners deserve a property tax system that is predictable and equitable,” said Holt. “Some New Brunswickers are seeing property tax increases of over forty percent in a single year. We can’t expect them to keep bearing these hikes.”
A comprehensive overhaul of the property tax system will ensure that everyone is paying their fair share and that New Brunswickers are not getting the financial shock their property tax bills have given over these past few years. Along with the rent cap, a commitment to build 30,000 new housing units, and the removal of PST on new builds, a modernized property tax system is a critical piece of Team Holt’s plan to tackle New Brunswick’s housing crisis.
New Brunswickers need relief from the cost of living pressures which have only been made worse by the Higgs Conservatives. “We need to get the right assessment values on the right properties and ensure that our property tax system isn’t making our affordability crisis worse,” concluded Holt.
A Holt government will work in partnership with municipalities to ensure that improvements start in the 2025 tax year, with the complete reform to be done for 2026.
