Official Opposition to introduce motion for immediate relief from high gasoline prices

The Official Opposition will table a motion urging the government to use its authority and act immediately to eliminate the 10.87 cents per litre provincial gas tax as of midnight, Friday May 20, for a period of four months and to immediately provide New Brunswickers earning less than $25,000 per year with an immediate one-time payment of $500.00
“The Premier continues to stall, to deflect and to abdicate his responsibility to ensure that New Brunswickers who are in desperate need of assistance in the face of sky-high gas, housing and food costs get the relief they deserve,” said Roger Melanson, Leader of the Official Opposition.
“New Brunswickers have had enough of his political games and are looking for real help in getting through the next few months of rising costs of living. He has the authority and can take immediate action – enough is enough – he needs to act now.”
The motion will be tabled during regular proceedings in the Legislative Assembly, Thursday, May
MOTION
Whereas many New Brunswickers are struggling financially because of the high price of gasoline;
Whereas New Brunswickers need and deserve relief to cope with high gas prices;
Whereas it is within authority of the Province of New Brunswick to lower the provincial tax on gasoline;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT the Legislative Assembly urge the Government to eliminate the 10.87 cents per litre of provincial tax on gasoline for a period of four months commencing at midnight on Friday, May 20, 2022;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Legislative Assembly urge the Government to provide a payment of $500.00 to all New Brunswickers earning less than $25,000.00 a year.
