Holt Team Commits to Eliminating the Provincial Sales Tax on Electricity Bills

September 19, 2024News

Saint John, September 19, 2024 – Today, Liberal Leader Susan Holt announced that a Holt government will eliminate the provincial sales tax (PST) on electricity bills for residential customers as soon as it takes office.

“Far too often, New Brunswickers have to choose between paying their electricity bill or rent, buying necessities, or heating their homes,” explains Susan Holt. “They need affordability relief right now, and we are giving them a clear choice: elect a Holt government and have money back in your pocket from savings on your power bill, or be forced to spend money to save money with the proposed Higgs tax cut.”

Details

  • The PST rate in New Brunswick is 10%.
  • This measure will help all households in the province quickly.
  • The measure is simple to apply, so people won’t have to do the complex legwork involved in some of the current government’s programs.
  • The cost of the measure is approximately $90 million of reduced revenue annually.

Impact

Cutting the PST on power would save the average New Brunswicker about $192 per year, with the highest consumption households saving around $750 annually.

“Unlike the proposed savings from the Higgs HST tax cut, our commitment will provide the affordability relief that New Brunswickers need right now,” said Holt.
