Fredericton, Tuesday, October 8, 2024 – Team Holt is committed to immediately eliminating the Higgs gas tax, which currently costs New Brunswickers approximately 4 cents more per litre every time they fill their tank. This measure is another part of the Holt team’s plan to help New Brunswickers cope with the rising cost of living.
”Higgs chose to charge New Brunswickers more for gas, rather than oil and gas refineries,” said Susan Holt, Leader of the Liberal Party. Our affordability plan will help New Brunswickers with the cost of necessities and provide real and immediate relief to those who need it.”
The Liberal team has put forward a 4-part plan to help New Brunswickers afford the necessities of daily life:
- Immediately cut the Higgs Gas Tax, saving New Brunswickers about 4 cents a litre at the pumps every time they fill up
- Eliminate the 10% provincial sales tax on your power bill, saving the average household $192 per year, with some saving over $700
- Immediately implement a rent cap at 3% to address rising rental increases that have been over 10% in recent years
- Make sure children get breakfast and lunch at school, saving New Brunswick families between $100-200 per month, per child
“The cost of power, rent, and gas has increased significantly under Higgs, and New Brunswickers shouldn’t have to spend money to save money while costs continue to rise,” said Holt. “Our team is focused on providing targeted relief measures that put money back into the pockets of New Brunswickers and their families.”
