The Liberal Opposition is proud to announce that Lisa Harris, MLA for Miramichi Bay-Neguac, is the first woman to serve as Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in New Brunswick.

“I feel honoured to be the first woman to chair the Public Accounts committee,” says Lisa Harris. “The work of this committee is fundamental in keeping government accountable and I take that very seriously. As Chair, I will always act impartially and in the best interest of New Brunswickers,”

The standing committee on Public Accounts handles the reports of government departments, provincial agencies, boards and commissions, and reviews the report of the Auditor General, the revenues and the expenditures of each government department for the prior fiscal year. It is also the only Legislative Committee that is chaired by a member of the Official Opposition.

“While I’m honoured to hold the title, the fact that I am first woman to chair this committee, in 2020, shows how little progress we’ve made since the first woman was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1967,” says the MLA for Miramichi Bay-Neguac. “You could put every single woman that has served as an MLA on the floor of the Legislature and still not have a full Legislative Assembly. Only 47 female MLAs have been elected in the history of New Brunswick. We must do better.”
