NEW MARYLAND – The New Brunswick Liberal Party held a nomination convention Tuesday night for the next provincial election on September 24, 2018.  Alex Scholten was nominated as the Liberal candidate for New Maryland – Sunbury in an uncontested meeting.

 

Premier Brian Gallant, who is also Leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Party, was present at the nomination and commended Scholten on his community engagement in the riding. “Alex has worked hard to improve the quality of life for families in his county by being involved and volunteering with many important organizations. He is also a strong advocate for economic growth in the riding of New Maryland – Sunbury,” said Gallant.

 

Alex and his wife Tara and their two children have lived in New Maryland for the past 13 years and have established close ties to the community. Alex Scholten was raised in Fredericton, working in his family’s chain of convenience stores. After earning degrees in both Commerce and Law at UNB, Alex began a career as a lawyer with a Bay Street law firm in Toronto. Alex returned to the Maritimes to complete an MBA in international business and began working for McCain Foods International as legal counsel.  In 1996, Alex returned to his roots and took over ownership and operation of two convenience stores and gas stations in Miramichi. Alex continued to practice law during this time and was active with the Atlantic and Canadian Convenience Stores Associations. Selling his stores after 13 years, Alex returned to practice law in Fredericton. From 2010 to 2016, he took on the role of national President with the Canadian Convenience Stores Association. Most recently, Alex has been working with a family-owned outdoor recreation business in Florida.

 

Alex has been an active community volunteer, lending his business and legal experience to Enterprise Fredericton, Ignite Fredericton, Business Immigrant Mentorship Program and Succession Connect Program with Fredericton’s Chamber of Commerce. Alex has also provided support and guidance to youth by being a Big Brother, coaching children in soccer, basketball and football and volunteering with the Boys and Girls Clubs / Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of New Brunswick, the New Maryland Elementary Home and School Association, and the Village of New Maryland Recreation Committee. Most recently, Alex was elected Deputy Mayor for the Village of New Maryland where he has served as Vice-Chair of the Village’s Age Friendly Community Committee and Co-Chair of the Solar Energy Research Committee. Alex is also the Zone representative for New Maryland on the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick.

 

Scholten is part of Premier Gallant’s large extended family through his mother Marilyn (Scholten) Gallant. Alex Scholten and Brian Gallant are among dozens of first cousins in the Scholten family.

Alex Scholten said he was honoured to receive the uncontested endorsement from the members of New Maryland – Sunbury. “I am honoured to be the Liberal candidate for New Maryland- Sunbury, and look forward to the opportunity to represent and advocate on behalf of the people in this riding.” said Scholten.
