MONCTON – The New Brunswick Liberal Association (NBLA) held its first Nominating Convention for the next provincial election on September 24, 2018.  Cathy Rogers, the province’s first female finance minister and current MLA for Moncton South, was nominated as the first official candidate for the Liberals in an uncontested meeting held Tuesday night.

Premier Brian Gallant, who is also Leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Party, was present at the nomination and commended Rogers on her work for the riding. “Cathy has played an important role in reducing the provincial deficit by half all the while growing the economy and investing more in education and health care. She has been instrumental in our government and she has truly served the people of her riding to the fullest” said Gallant.

Rogers received her PhD in Sociology from the University of New Brunswick (UNB). She served as a professor at Crandall University and UNB for 14 years with a policy focus on child and youth poverty. She has also spent 18 years as a federal and provincial civil servant in several departments. First elected to serve Moncton South in 2014, Rogers went on to become Minister of Social Development, and was appointed the province’s first female Minister in 2016.

Rogers said she was humbled to receive the uncontested endorsement from her riding. “It is an honour, privilege, and pleasure to offer again to serve the great folks of Moncton South” said Rogers. “The people in the riding are diverse and have diverse needs and interests. The citizens of Moncton South are active, engaged, and friendly. I truly love this constituency.”

The provincial Liberals will hold a total of three nomination conventions this week. The list of official contestants for nominations are available on the New Brunswick Liberal Party’s website at nbliberal.ca. In addition to Moncton South, the Liberals will hold nomination meetings this week for Fredericton West-Hanwell on Wednesday, April 19, and for Madawaska Les Lacs-Edmundston on Saturday, April 22.
